Peace, Through The Practice of YOGA.

 ~ Frequently Asked Questions ~

General

Q: I have never practiced yoga before...do I need experience before I join?
A: No.  You do not need prior experience.

Q: Does your studio accept beginners?
A: Yes!  We accept and teach to all manner of practitioner...from the new to the seasoned.

Q: I am not flexible at all...does that matter?
A: The practice of yoga does not require flexibility.  You simply need to breath, focus and follow the verbal cues.  Flexibility is a by-product of consistent practice.

Q: What is a "donation based class"?
A: The classes deemed "donation based" are paid for by donation only.  When you come in for that class, your payment is your offering for the teaching.

Practice Etiquette

Q: Is there a certain way students are supposed to place their mats when setting-up for class?
A: Yes.  All students should arrange their mats perpendicular to the front focal wall beginning at the center and working out to the sides, creating a single line or row of mats...with adequate and comfortable spacing in-between.  When one row is full, the next row begins.  This helps maintain cleanliness and order (shaucha) of the practice hall and also promote an even flow of the energy.

Q: I really want to come to yoga class, but I am going to be late!  Can I still attend?
A: If you arrive late to class you may still attend as long as it is no more that 10 minutes into the class.  After that, you will not be allowed to enter.  *If you do arrive late, you must wait by the entry into the practice hall for the teacher to acknowledge you. Do not just walk in and set up.  Especially during opening invocation.  You must wait at the entry.  When she or he sees you, the teacher will give you a hand signal cue when to come in and where to place your mat.  Move with awareness and be extremely quiet so as not to disrupt the energy or flow of the class at hand.

Q: I notice at the end of class when the teacher is conducting pranayama or giving closing lessons, some students are facing straight forward while others are turned or angled toward the teacher.  Which should I do?
A: It is traditional practice to turn and angle towards the teacher during pranayama, ending lessons and even during meditation.  This fosters an even flow of energy to pass between teacher and student.

Q: At the end of class, the teacher bows to us (the students) and says "Namaste".  Are we supposed to do the same in return?
A: Yes!  Namaste is used as a greeting, a salutation, a parting phrase and a blessing.  Simply translated, it means - the divine in me, honors the divine in you.  To not repeat the word and gesture back to the teacher is the same as refusing to shake someone's hand when greeting them or saying "hello" back when they have said "hello" to you.

Q: At the end of class, I notice some students get-up quickly and leave the practice hall right away, while others wait for the teacher to leave the practice hall before moving...what is the proper way of leaving the practice hall?
A: The practice of yoga does not simply end at the end of class.  There is no need to rush out back into the world.  As a general guideline, and since we are a "traditional" yoga studio, students should be patient and wait for the teacher to exit before gathering their things, rolling-up their mat and exiting.  We understand some students must return to work or other daily activities straight-away...but mindfulness in this process should be observed.
